The Details That Tie a Garden Together
A new driveway or patio often looks unfinished without the pieces that link it all together: a path to the back gate, proper steps up to the door, or a low wall to frame the front garden.
Many gardens in and around Godalming sit on a slope, so steps and retaining walls are often part of the job. We set out steps with even, comfortable heights, build walls on proper concrete footings, and make sure water drains away from paths rather than pooling on them.
We work in the same materials as our driveways and patios, so everything matches: block paving, sandstone slabs, clay pavers, crazy paving and facing brick chosen to suit your house.

Paths, Steps & Walls Questions
Do garden walls need planning permission?
In England, a new wall usually does not need permission if it is no higher than 1 metre where it runs beside a road used by vehicles (or its footway), or 2 metres elsewhere. If your home is listed or sits in one of Godalming’s conservation areas the limits can be lower, so it is worth asking Waverley Borough Council before building.
What is the best surface for a garden path?
It depends on how the path is used and the look of the garden. Block paving is very hard-wearing for side passages and bin stores, sandstone slabs feel softer and more natural through planting, and crazy paving suits older properties. We will show you samples and suggest what works with your house.
Can you make steps safer in a sloping garden?
Yes. We set out steps with even, comfortable heights and depths, use paving with a textured surface and give each tread a slight fall so rainwater drains off rather than sitting on the step.
Can you repair or rebuild an old brick wall?
Usually. Loose or leaning sections can be taken down and rebuilt on a proper footing, and we try to reuse the original bricks or find a close match so the repair blends in.
