Block Paved Driveways With Real Character

From tumbled, cobble-effect blocks that suit an older cottage to crisp grey herringbone for a modern semi, block paving lets you design a driveway around your house rather than the other way round.

Godalming has everything from Bargate stone cottages to post-war estates, so we don’t push one look. We bring samples, lay out a few options and talk through colour, block size, laying pattern and borders until the drive looks right for your home.

What you don’t see matters just as much. We dig out to a depth that suits the ground and the vehicles using it, build and compact a granular sub-base, then fix a solid edge restraint all the way round so the blocks can’t creep. On sloping plots — common on the hills around the town — we plan where the rain will go before a single block is laid.

Choosing your blocks

  • Tumbled blocks for a softer, aged look
  • Smooth, crisp blocks for a contemporary finish
  • Herringbone, basketweave or stretcher bond
  • Contrasting borders, bands and feature panels

Covering a long approach or keeping to a tighter budget? Compare with tarmac driveways. If your existing blocks are sound but sunken or stained, repairs and resurfacing may be all you need.

What’s included

What a Block Paving Job Includes

Every quote spells out exactly what we will do. This is what is usually covered.

Survey & design

Measurements, levels and access checked, and a layout agreed with you before any work is booked.

Dig-out & waste removal

The old surface and spoil taken away so the new drive starts on a clean, level formation.

Sub-base & edge restraints

A compacted granular base, plus kerbs or edging set in concrete to lock the paving in place.

Drainage

Falls, channel drains or a soakaway so rainwater goes somewhere sensible — never towards the house.

Laying & cutting

Blocks laid in your chosen pattern, with neat cuts around covers, walls and doorsteps.

Jointing & compaction

Kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints and the surface compacted so the blocks bind together.

A free visit to measure up, check levels and access, and show you material options, then a written quote.

  3. Dig out & base

The old surface comes up, spoil is taken away, and a compacted sub-base is built to suit the ground.

  4. Lay & edge

Blocks, slabs or tarmac go down with edging, drainage and any borders or features you’ve chosen.

  5. Tidy & handover

Joints finished, the site cleared and swept, and a walk-round with you before we leave.

Block Paving Questions

Can block paving be laid on a steep driveway?

Yes. Block paving copes well with slopes as long as the base is deep enough, the edges are firmly restrained so the blocks cannot creep downhill, and there is somewhere for the water to go — usually a channel drain across the bottom. On very steep sections we may suggest a textured block for extra grip.

Tumbled or smooth blocks — which should I choose?

Tumbled blocks have softened, slightly irregular edges that give an aged, cobbled look and suit older and cottage-style homes. Smooth blocks give a crisp, contemporary finish. Laid properly, both are equally hard-wearing, so it comes down to the look you want.

How soon can I park on my new block paving?

Usually as soon as we have finished. Once the blocks are compacted and the joints filled, the surface can take a car straight away. The jointing sand settles over the first few weeks, so we recommend a light top-up afterwards.

Does block paving need to be sealed?

It is not essential. A good-quality sealer can make oil and dirt easier to clean off and helps hold the jointing sand in place, which slows weed growth. We will tell you honestly whether it is worth it for your drive.
