What affects the price of a new driveway in Godalming?
Mainly the area being surfaced, what is being taken up, how deep the new base needs to be, the surface you choose and any extras such as steps, walls, drainage channels or a widened dropped kerb. Sloping plots and tight access can add time. We come out, measure and talk it through, then give you a written quote at no cost and with no obligation.
Do I need permission from Waverley Borough Council for a new driveway?
Usually not. Paving over a front garden in England only needs planning permission when more than five square metres of impermeable surface drains straight onto the road. A permeable finish, or falls that send rainwater to a lawn, border or soakaway, keeps the job within permitted development. Parts of Godalming are conservation areas and listed buildings have extra controls, so check with Waverley Borough Council if either applies. A new or wider dropped kerb is approved separately by Surrey County Council.
My driveway slopes. Is block paving or tarmac better?
Both work well on a slope when the base, edges and drainage are designed for it. Block paving gives good grip and every block is locked in by strong edge restraints; tarmac suits long or curving approaches. On steeper drives we plan where the water will go, often with a channel drain across the bottom so it does not run towards the house or garage.
How long will we be without our driveway?
It depends on the size of the job, but we will give you a timetable with your quote and keep you posted as work goes on. Block paving can normally be driven on as soon as it has been compacted and the joints sanded. Fresh tarmac needs gentler use for its first few weeks, especially in hot weather.
Do you take away the old driveway and waste?
Yes. Digging out the old surface, removing spoil and rubble, and leaving the site swept and tidy is all part of the job.
