Repair, Resurface or Replace?
Plenty of driveways around Godalming don’t need tearing out. A worn surface, a sunken patch or loose edging can often be put right for a fraction of the cost of a new drive — as long as the cause is dealt with too.
We start by working out why the drive has failed. Common culprits are a thin or poorly compacted base, water getting underneath, missing edge restraints, tree roots or old service trenches that have settled. Once we know the cause, we can recommend the lightest fix that will genuinely last.
Sometimes the honest answer is replacement. The worn tarmac drive pictured, with its crumbling front edge, was dug out and relaid in red herringbone block paving — the finished result is the first photo in the gallery below.
Signs your drive needs attention
- Dips, ruts or rocking blocks
- Cracks, potholes or crumbling tarmac edges
- Puddles that never seem to drain
- Weeds and moss taking over the joints

Repairs & Resurfacing Questions
Can you match my existing block paving?
Often. Where a section has sunk, we can usually lift and relay your own blocks, so the repair is a perfect match. If extra blocks are needed and the original range is discontinued, we will find the closest match or suggest a contrasting border so the new work looks deliberate.
Is resurfacing cheaper than a new driveway?
Usually, because the existing base stays in place. It only makes sense when that base is still sound, though. If the drive has sunk, is breaking up across a wide area or does not drain, a new surface on a failed base will not last, and we will tell you so.
Tree roots are lifting my drive. What can be done?
We lift the affected area, assess the roots and rebuild the base before relaying. Cutting roots can harm a tree, and trees in conservation areas or covered by a Tree Preservation Order need consent from Waverley Borough Council first, so we will talk through the options before any work starts.
Can a mossy, stained driveway be brought back without replacing it?
In many cases, yes. A thorough clean, weed and moss removal, fresh kiln-dried sand in the joints and, if you like, a sealer can transform block paving that is structurally sound. We will be upfront if the surface is too far gone for that to be worthwhile.
